Me and a crab:
While I am not particularly a crab fan myself, I thought it would be fun to write about this seemingly popular delicacy. Little did I realize, there is not much information available on the internet about Alaskan King Crabs, nor is it as popular a “sport” as I thought it was.
Here are a few fun facts about the industry:
- There are three types of crab: Red, Blue and Golden
- Red king crab is the most sought after and lives at depths of 120-600 ft
- The prime fishing season is from October to January
- The peak of king crab fishing industry was in 1980 when Alaskan fisheries produced 200 million pounds of crab. In 2010, only 24 million pounds were harvested.
- Today, about 100 fishing boats participate in catching king crab
I recently decided that I would drink at least one interesting, odd juice per week (especially because it’s the trendy thing to do, duh.) This past weekend, I had an amazing experience purchasing an intimidating green spinach-parsley-cucumber-spiruella drink from juice press (http://juicepress.com). It was not what an average person would call “delicious” however I enjoyed it thoroughly and would do it again (even thought it cost me $10) #slightlysteep
Yesterday, however, was a different story.
I wanted to be adventurous and keep with my plan: the ingestion of creepy-colored juices. I thought I found my match with Kombucha: I never heard of it, found it in a large refrigerated wall at Whole Foods, it had minimal calories and sugar, and contained spirulina, chlorella and blue-green algae. Perrrrfecttt!
Well. It was slightly carbonated, tasted like apple cider vinegar, and left me unbelievably and uncomfortably gassy for the remainder of my afternoon.
Hence my investigation: What is Kombucha?
It’s fermented tea with live bacteria and yeast cultures.
Is it healthy to ingest this? Kombucha producers allege that it ‘detoxifies the body and energizes the mind’, however, there is no scientific research behind these claims.
Could it be potentially harmful, ingesting bacteria and fungus? Kombucha is definitely drink at your own risk! But if you ask me, I am skeptical of things that have warnings geared towards pregnant women and the elderly.
